The Quick Guide to Common Household Stains

Spills happen in every home, but a stain is only permanent if you let it become one. The difference between a mark that lifts cleanly and one that sets for good usually comes down to how quickly and how calmly you respond in the first few minutes.

Before reaching for any product it helps to know a few universal rules, and then the specific trick for each type of stain. Here is a practical cheat sheet for the spills you are most likely to face.

The golden rules

Three rules apply to almost every stain. First, act fast: the longer a spill sits, the deeper it penetrates and the harder it sets, so deal with it while it is fresh. Second, blot, never rub — pressing gently with a clean cloth lifts the liquid out, whereas rubbing grinds it deeper into the fibres and spreads it wider.

Third, always test your cleaning solution on a hidden area first, especially on carpet, upholstery and natural fabrics, to make sure it will not damage or discolour the material. And as a general rule, use cool water rather than hot on an unknown stain, because heat can permanently set proteins and certain dyes into the fibres.

Coffee, tea and other drinks

Coffee and tea are tannin-based and respond well to prompt treatment. Blot up as much as you can, then work in a solution of cool water with a little washing-up liquid, blotting from the outside of the stain inwards to stop it spreading. Rinse with clean water and blot dry.

For a stubborn residue, a splash of white vinegar in the water helps break down the tannins. The same gentle approach works for most soft drinks and fruit juices — the key, as always, is to treat them before they dry rather than after.

Red wine

Red wine looks alarming but is very manageable if you move quickly. Blot up the excess immediately, then pour a little cool water over the area to dilute what remains and keep blotting. Resist the urge to scrub, and never use hot water, which sets the pigment.

Sprinkling salt on a fresh spill can help draw the wine up out of a carpet while you gather your supplies. A solution of washing-up liquid and a little white vinegar in cool water then lifts most of what is left. On carpet and upholstery, patience and repeated gentle blotting win the day.

Grease and oil

Grease needs a different tactic, because water alone will not shift it. The trick is absorption first: sprinkle baking soda, cornflour or talc generously over the mark and leave it for fifteen minutes or so to soak up the oil, then brush or vacuum it away.

Follow up with a little washing-up liquid, which is formulated precisely to cut through grease, worked gently into the remaining mark and then rinsed clean. For grease on clothing, treating the spot before washing — and checking it has gone before you tumble-dry — stops the stain from being locked in by the heat.

Ink, grass and pet accidents

Ink can often be lifted with a cloth dampened in a little surgical spirit or an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, dabbed rather than rubbed from the edges inwards, using a clean section of cloth each time. Grass stains, being both pigment and protein, respond to a paste of baking soda and water or a dab of washing-up liquid worked in before washing.

Pet accidents need prompt attention and an enzyme-based cleaner, which breaks down the odour-causing residues rather than just masking them — ordinary cleaners often leave a scent that draws pets back to the same spot. Blot thoroughly first, treat the area, and allow it to dry completely.

When to call a professional

Some stains are best not tackled alone. Set-in marks on carpet, delicate or antique upholstery, natural stone and anything you are genuinely unsure about can be made worse by the wrong product — and a botched home attempt sometimes costs more to put right than the original stain. When the material is valuable or the mark is stubborn, professional equipment and know-how are worth it.
